Litigation Solicitor
Litigation Solicitor
Cheltenham | Hybrid | £55,000 - £70,000
Not every dispute follows the same path. If you enjoy unpicking complex issues, developing robust case strategies and finding the right outcome for your clients, this could be your next move.
An established law firm in Cheltenham is looking to recruit an experienced Litigation Solicitor to join its dispute resolution team. This is an opportunity for a confident, commercially minded litigator who wants genuine responsibility for their own cases, exposure to a broad range of disputes and the chance to play an active role in developing a growing practice.
You'll work with a varied client base, handle matters from initial instruction through to resolution and collaborate with senior colleagues on more complex cases. With hybrid working, defined career progression and opportunities to support junior lawyers, this role offers scope to develop your expertise while making a meaningful contribution to the team.
The Role
You'll manage your own caseload of contentious matters, taking responsibility for case strategy, client advice and the progression of disputes through negotiation, mediation and court proceedings where appropriate.
The work is varied, with opportunities to handle civil and commercial disputes, property litigation and contentious probate, depending on your experience and interests. You'll also have the opportunity to assist directors on larger, more complex cases and support the development of junior members of the team.
Your responsibilities will include:
Litigation & Dispute Resolution: Managing a varied caseload of civil, commercial and other contentious matters, progressing cases efficiently and working towards favourable outcomes for clients.
Case Strategy: Assessing the merits of disputes, developing litigation strategies, advising on risks and costs, and identifying opportunities for negotiation or settlement.
Client Advice: Advising a diverse client base, including businesses, trusts, charities and individuals, providing clear guidance throughout the dispute resolution process.
Drafting & Documentation: Preparing statements of case, witness statements, legal correspondence and other documents required to progress proceedings effectively.
Court & Alternative Dispute Resolution: Representing clients in court where appropriate and conducting or supporting mediation, settlement negotiations and other forms of dispute resolution.
Counsel & External Experts: Instructing counsel and working collaboratively with external specialists on complex or contested matters.
Property & Contentious Probate: Handling property disputes and contentious probate matters where these align with your experience and expertise.
Supervision & Collaboration: Supporting and supervising junior colleagues, sharing knowledge and contributing to the development of the wider team.
Business Development: Building professional relationships, developing your own network and contributing to the growth and reputation of the dispute resolution practice.
The Opportunity
For an experienced litigator, this role offers the opportunity to work across a broader range of disputes while retaining ownership of your cases and your relationships with clients.
You'll join an established dispute resolution team with a mixture of experienced lawyers, junior fee earners and support staff. This creates scope to collaborate on substantial matters, learn from senior colleagues and contribute your own experience to the development of the team.
The position also offers the opportunity to take on greater responsibility beyond fee earning. Whether that's assisting with director-led cases, supporting junior lawyers or developing your own referral network, you'll have the chance to make a wider contribution to the practice.
With defined career progression, hybrid working and a broad mix of contentious work, this is an attractive opportunity for a solicitor who wants to continue developing their technical expertise, commercial judgement and professional standing.
What We're Looking For
We're keen to speak with Litigation Solicitors who are confident managing disputes, enjoy direct client contact and can combine technical expertise with a practical, commercially aware approach.
You'll ideally have:
Experience: At least five years' PQE in litigation or dispute resolution.
Technical Ability: Strong knowledge of civil litigation, with experience in commercial disputes, property litigation, contentious probate or related contentious work.
Case Management: The ability to manage matters independently from initial instruction through to conclusion.
Strategic Thinking: Confidence assessing legal merits, advising on risk and developing appropriate strategies for resolving disputes.
Drafting Skills: Strong experience preparing pleadings, witness statements, legal correspondence and other litigation documentation.
Advocacy & Negotiation: Experience representing clients in court or at alternative dispute resolution, with the confidence to negotiate effectively.
Client Relationships: Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain complex legal issues in a clear, practical and accessible way.
Commercial Awareness: An understanding of costs, proportionality and the commercial objectives underpinning each dispute.
Business Development: The motivation to develop professional relationships, generate work and contribute to the growth of the team.
Team Contribution: A collaborative approach, with the ability and willingness to support and supervise junior colleagues where appropriate.
Candidates with a strong specialism in a particular area of litigation may also be considered, depending on their experience and the needs of the team.
Salary & Benefits
The firm offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience, alongside a comprehensive benefits package including:
Hybrid Working: Flexibility to work between the office and home.
Annual Leave: 25 days' holiday plus bank holidays.
Pension: Pension provision.
